Teach early. Teach often.

Teachable moments help serve as conversation-starters to discussions about respecting women and fostering healthy relationships by illustrating everyday scenarios and offering guidance on how to address them. The "Moments" listed to the left are a few examples. Use them to help you react when issues about violence, dating abuse, and demeaning attitudes and behaviors arise in your family or community.

Also, media and entertainment can often be useful in providing examples of different types of relationships, and how people treat each other - whether right or wrong.

Just remember, what starts a conversation isn't as important as the dialogue and conclusions in the conversation.

Connect.

Be candid, be honest, and listen well to your kids. When talking about violence against women, it may help to use the experiences of your own family and friends to make the strongest impression and your point, more personal. Say something like, "How would you feel if your sister were the girl being talked about or threatened?"

How many girls report being beaten or abused by a dating partner by the time she graduates high school?
