It's Just A Song

"Hey dad, what's up?" he calls. "Can Joe and Sammy have a ride home from practice?"

You nod and pop the trunk. The three boys laugh and sing as they load their equipment in the car and hop in the back seat. You hear your son sing: "I'll beat her down, I'll beat her down, I'll beat her down with a bat."

Connect.

Dad: "Hey guys, those lyrics sound really disrespectful to me. Talking about beating up girls is serious. Do you think itıs ok to hit girls or talk to your friends about it?"

Your disapproval isn't just about the lyrics, the type of song, or the singer. Encourage your kids to think about what respect for girls is and guide them to understand that what may seem like just a song is degrading and helps maintain negative and subordinate views of women. Let them know that those you admire use their talents to inspire people in positive ways.
